Merlot is an important red grape variety in China. With large berries and thin skins, it produces full-bodied, smooth wines with cherry and plum fruit aromas, complemented by sweet notes of chocolate and vanilla. In China, Merlot is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to create a balanced style that meets consumer preferences. Major producing regions include Yantai, Shandong; Huailai, Hebei; and the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain in Ningxia. Ningxia's Merlot, influenced by a cool climate, exhibits higher acidity and a more structured palate.
